Hsiunglin Township in Hsinchu County is an agricultural area irrigated by the protected Touqian River, with fertile soil renowned for producing high-quality rice, so notable that it is even mentioned in elementary school textbooks.
During the Japanese colonial period, rice from Hsiunglin was considered especially delicious and was designated as “Imperial Rice” for the Japanese Emperor. While most of the harvest was taken as tribute, local farmers were left with only limited rations, forcing them to hide grain just to enjoy their own rice.
Today, the Hsiunglin Township Farmers’ Association and local farmers work together through contract farming to ensure that consumers can enjoy authentic “Touqian River Hsiunglin Rice” at every meal—offering a taste once reserved for emperors.
